AI for Images and Music: My Experience at FilmGate Miami’s Machine Learning Monday

I had the chance to attend an exciting event last night, April 14, 2025, hosted by FilmGate Miami at their impressive downtown location. The event was part of their monthly Machine Learning Monday series, and this time, the focus was on the fascinating world of AI in images and sound. As someone who loves exploring how technology intersects with creativity, I was eager to see what the speakers had to share.

Sebastian Acevedo: From Marketing to AI Innovations

AI for Images

The first speaker, Sebastian Acevedo, really set the tone for the evening. As the CEO of Memorable (which was acquired by Reddit), he gave us a deep dive into how AI is transforming marketing. He explained how Memorable’s AI tool helps marketers predict how well an ad will be remembered by looking at factors like artwork, layout, and wording. I found it fascinating that AI doesn’t follow traditional coding rules—like the “If this, then that” model. Instead, it analyzes massive amounts of data to infer patterns and make decisions.

Sebastian also introduced us to something called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which are used to generate realistic images by comparing real ones to fake ones, continuously getting better over time. If you’ve ever wondered how AI can create such realistic visuals, this was a great explanation of the process.

He also shared his thoughts on where AI is headed. One key takeaway for me was the emphasis on building AI solutions for specific industries, rather than broad, general-purpose applications. He sees huge potential in creating AI tailored to verticals like healthcare, entertainment, and finance. Another interesting point was about the evolution of user interfaces—moving beyond screens to include voice and visual recognition, allowing us to interact with technology in new ways.

Next up was Dr. Tom Collins, an Associate Professor at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. With his background in music, psychology, and AI, Tom brought a unique perspective on how AI is changing the world of music production. He shared examples from his students who used a tool called Suno to turn text prompts into music. The creative potential here is mind-blowing—imagine typing out an idea and having AI turn it into a full-blown song.

Tom also showcased some pretty cool AI music models. One of my favorites was the Tone Transfer model, which took an Indian vocal melody and turned it into a trumpet performance while preserving the original tonal pattern. It was wild to hear how AI could completely transform one sound into another without losing its essence.

Then, he demonstrated voice cloning with a tool called Kits.AI. This tool can replicate a person’s voice so accurately that it’s almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Tom also touched on stem splitting, where AI breaks down songs into individual components, making it easier for musicians and producers to remix or modify tracks.

FilmGate Miami: A Creative Hub

The event was held at FilmGate Miami’s stunning office in Downtown, Miami—a place that truly feels like a creative hub. I was impressed by how FilmGate continues to support the local tech and media communities. With programs like the FilmGate Fellowship and various workshops, they’re helping to nurture new talent and push the boundaries of what’s possible in media and technology.
